About Misolog®

Rating of sales:

Misolog® is manufactured by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Misolog® contains an active ingredient Misoprostol, which is miscellaneous GI agent - a synthetic analog of prostaglandin E1.

Misolog® is taken to prevent ulcers formation caused by the treatment with pain-killers like NSAIDs in the elderly, in people who are taking NSAIDs to manage long-term conditions such as arthritis, and in patients with a history of ulcers.

NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, indomethacin) are painkillers which can reduce the production of gut protective prostaglandins.

This means NSAIDs have the potential to damage the gut lining, causing ulcers, bleeding and sometimes even perforation (holes) in the gut.

Synthetic prostaglandins such as Misolog® given orally "replace" the prostaglandins whose production is inhibited by NSAIDs and have been shown to protect the lining of the stomach from NSAID-induced ulcers. By binding to prostaglandin receptors in the stomach Misolog® stimulates the production of protective mucus. This coats the lining of the stomach and intestines and reduces the production of stomach acid.

Misoprostol causes the cervix to soften and the uterus to contract, resulting in the expulsion of the uterine contents.

Note, that Misolog® can also be used along with one tablet of Mifepristone. Mifepristone is a synthetic, steroidal anti-progesterone. Mifepristone acts as a competitive progesterone receptor antagonist. In medical abortion, Mifepristone blocks progesterone receptors and causes thereby endometrial decidual degeneration, cervical softening and dilatation, an increase in the sensitivity of the myometrium to the contractile effects of Misoprostol.

Misolog® doesn't protect you and your partner from sexually transmitted diseases (HIV and the others).

Recommended dose for NSAID-induced gastric and duodenal ulcers treatment and prophylaxis:

Misolog® tablets should be taken for the duration of NSAID therapy: 200 mcg orally 4 times a day after meals and at bedtime.

Recommended dose for labor induction: 25 mcg vaginally every 4 to 6 hours.

Recommended dose for prophylaxis of postpartum bleeding: 400 to 600 mcg orally or rectally after delivery of the baby, but before delivery of the placenta.

Recommended dose for cervical ripening before surgical abortion: 400 mcg vaginally, 3 to 4 hours before suction curettage.

Recommended dose for abortion with Misolog® only: four tablets are recommended and four more may be required for its completion.

It is best to use Misolog® within 9 weeks since the last menstruation; that is, fewer than 63 days counting from the first day of the last regular period.

The earlier in the pregnancy Misolog® is administered the better because it is safer, more effective and less painful.

Misolog® can be used later in pregnancy but the risks of complications are higher.

Try not to use Misolog® pills alone for second-trimester abortions, as the chances of serious complications such as uterine rupture or hemorrhage rise as pregnancy advances. Ready access to emergency care in a medical facility is essential, and women should not attempt an abortion alone. They must also be prepared for the passing of a fetus and placenta at this stage.

Women with an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) in place should have it removed before using Misolog®.

Note, that Misolog® pills are less effective alone than when combined with Mifepristone.

Recommended dose for abortion with Misolog® and Mifepristone:

The first trimester of pregnancy: 400 mcg orally once as a single dose 48 hours after Mifepristone administration. Alternatively, 800 mcg vaginally 48 hours after Mifepristone administration. When used with methotrexate, 5 to 7 days later give 800 mcg vaginally (Misolog® dose may be repeated 24 hours later if needed).

In failed pregnancy or fetal death: 800 mcg vaginally once or twice (doses given 24 hours apart).

The second trimester of pregnancy: 600 mcg vaginally, 36 to 48 hours after Mifepristone administration, followed by 400 mcg orally or vaginally every 3 hours to a maximum of 5 doses in the first 24 hours.

Do not share this medication with another person.
