About Tobrex® Eye Drops

Tobrex® solution is manufactured by Alcon. The active constituent in Tobrex® eye drops is Tobramycin, a water-soluble antibiotic from Aminoglycoside class. Tobrex® eye drops are used to treat infections of the external part of the eye as well as its appendages.


- blepharitis;

- blepharoconjunctivitis;

- bacterial conjunctivitis;

- dacryocystitis;

- keratitis;

- keratoconjunctivitis;

- acute meibomianitis.

Tobrex® solution is not used to treat viral or fungal infections of the eyes.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Tobramycin is an ophthalmological anti-infective agent, that works by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins within bacterium. Tobramycin, thereby, damages bacteria cells and clears up infection from the human body. Tobramycin is effective against aerobic gram-positive microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus); aerobic gram-negative microorganisms (Citrobacter species, Enterobacter species, Escherichia col, Klebsiella species, Morganella morganii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Providencia species, Serratis specie).


Instill one or two drops into the treated eye(s) every 4 hours.

For severe infections: instill two drops into the treated eye(s) hourly until improvement.

Use eye drops for 7 days.


Tobrex® eye drops are not intended for use in children under 1 year of age.

Tobrex® is a sterile solution for topical ophthalmic use only, not for injection.

Tobrex® solution is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using Tobrex® immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.

Patients should not wear contact lenses if they have signs or symptoms of bacterial eye infection.

Remove contact lenses before using Tobrex® eye drops.

Wash your hands before using the eye drops.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.


If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.


Store at a cool temperature, away from excess moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.

Side effects

The most common side effects associated with Tobrex® solution are:

  • antibiotic-associated diarrhea
  • allergic reactions
  • tearing
  • swelling of the eye
  • itching
  • stinging
  • burning of the eye

Side effects occurrence does not only depend on the medication you are taking, but also on your overall health and other factors.


Tobrex® solution is not for injection.

Do not use Tobrex® eye drops if you are allergic to Tobramycin or other Aminoglycosides.

Do not use Tobrex® eye drops if you are allergic to any ingredient comprised in Tobrex® solution.

Do not use Tobrex® eye drops if you have a history of severe allergic reactions associated with using antibiotics.

Do not use Tobrex® eye drops if you are taking cephalosporin antibiotic (Ceftazidime) as it may decrease the effect of Tobramycin.

Discontinue using Tobrex® eye drops immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Do not to use Tobrex® eye drops if you are pregnant, plan to have a baby or are breastfeeding.
